Balair / CTA / Belair
Short history of the airlines:
The "first" Balair was founded in Basel (hence the name) in 1925 and merged with Ad Astra in 1931 to form Swissair. The "second" Balair was again founded in Basel in 1956 as an independent charter carrier and merged with the other large Swiss charter airline CTA (founded in Geneva in 1978 as a successor to SATA) in 1993. The resulting airline was first called BalairCTA, however this silly name was soon changed back to Balair only. After the demise of Swissair in 2001 Balair was bought out by Swiss tour operator Hotelplan as its in-house carrier and was subsequently renamed Belair. In 2007, Belair was taken over by Air Berlin and its operations integrated in those of its new owner.
