Euro 2008
The European Football Championship is the world's third largest sports event after the Olympics and the Football World Cup. Taking place every four years, in June 2008 it was hosted in Austria and Switzerland. With Basel being the main venue in Switzerland with six matches played here (Switzerland vs. Czech Republic, Switzerland vs. Turkey, Switzerland vs. Portugal, Portugal vs. Germany, Netherlands vs. Russia and Germany vs. Turkey), our local airport got a fair share of special charter flights transporting fans in support of their national teams.
